This version is just almost perfect. I like the way Elvis changes just a few things with the melody in every live performance.

to call bruce thomas a hack, is like calling you a slowpoke.

Yes I'm sure Elvis Costello ran out of magic the day he parted with .. um .. what's that hack's name again?

Brilliant as Costello is, its much harder for a listener to appreciate a world-class bass player. Bruce Thomas really and truly made whole much greater that the sum of the parts in the Attractions. Sure, he spoke out when he felt Elvis was an arrogant jerk; many boss-artists were and are. And the relationship couldnt bear the friction. But Elvis, much as we admire you, and you did have to separate... you will probably never again sound as good as you did with this guy.

Aahhh Clover. The best backing band in the World :-)
FSMnoodle (August 22, 2008 at 7:12 pm)
The credit is all Mr Costello's. Thanks anyway. Peace.

johnners53 Yes, 'scottleonardi' is correct. It's no wonder people get misled about this. Clive Langer wrote the tune for Robert Wyatt but was unhappy the lyric he (Clive i.e. I think) had written. So EC wrote a new lyric for the tune. Wyatt released the song (Clive on organ, Elvis backing vocal) first in '82 and EC, although the original writer (with Langer), didn't actually record it until the following year! Both are marvellous renditions of a gre@ song.

Elvis, like many good singer/songwriters, they are made better by a great backing band though seldom does history provide due credit to groups like the Attractions. Elvis' early success owes as much to the group as it does his songs.
