UP SD40-2 acting like an Alco

Union Pacific 3467 might have a turbocharger problem as it leads another SD40-2 and 2 C30-7s westbound at Borie, WY 9/14/82. I thought that old railfan adage was "inside every GE is an Alco screaming to get out".

Saw a 90 while I was in Rochelle. Light smoke, but still pulling hard in august 2008.

Those are -7s, not U-boats.

The last SD90 I ran shut down due to low lube oil pressure just as we were pulling into Stockton, CA. We tied the train down in the yard and left it there and tied up, since we were done for the day. Piece of junk in my opinion. Of course, the maintenance on these units leaves something to be desired.

If you want to see Turbo Trouble come see my video of a Conrail U25B that looks like a steam engine!

They still run some SD40-2s up here on BNSF, but most of them have been replaced by SD90ACe or GE ES44DC/Dash 9-44CW.

I agree its a great engine & my favorite north american cab engine to run. I run on the whichita service unit in KS & OK. We get them on coal & grain loads, but thats about it. UP just doesnt take care of them anymore. They seem to get the step-child treatment for some reason. But they pull hard & I guess thats all that matters. UP is reffered to as "the new rock island" when it comes to taking care of its power.lol!

The 90 is a great engine, UP just doesn't use em right. Always looked good pulling coal on the Overland route, but i don't know where you personally run at most of the time.
