KO8E89: When you said, "There you go, jerk", that's called an ad hominem attack. ad = Latin for 'to' hominem = Latin for 'man' (accusative case ending) It means "to the man". McCain's campaign was a brilliant example of ad hominem attacks: "Obama was palling around with terrorists", "Obama is a Socialist", "Obama tried to fix the election through ACORN". It's the choice of the desperate. Thought you'd like a history lesson in your attack, which I thought you were going to avoid.

I think people are defending the Canadian Brass because you are making the CB seem superficial. If you put it in a nice way, then people wouldn't think you are a jerk. Let me help you out: "I believe the Canadian Brass is a great quintet, but lack certain dexterity to play jazz styles of music. Instead of playing jazz they should stick to classical music in which they have perfected. Thank you all." There you go, jerk.

sigmaclass: I'm not certain I follow your history of dorky jazz. It is more likely that classical players found that playing in a 'swing style' was more accessible to the audience, but rather than actually listen and copy, they produced a superficial, bastardized version that sounded good enough for the 'uneducated masses'. To my ears, though, dorky is a very good adjective for what it sounds like.

As a classical trumpet player who used to be a lead trumpet player I have something to say. They are not trying to play legit jazz, in my profession we call it "dorky orchestral swing". It is just the way it evolved and it is actually difficult to do after playing so much "real" jazz. It is sort of like when composers use a traditional song in romantic music, similar melody but not nearly the same style.
