he was doing harmonics which make the tone change making it sound friggen awsome

He is playing artificial harmonics. The right hand index finger lightly touches the string an octave (12 frets) higher and then with another finger on the same hand you pluck getting that harmonic sound. The left hand holds the chord(s) in the standard way.
