why would he even talk about the 'negative' things relative to his father, sounds like he may have been more focused on the 'negative' things in his daddy's life

I don't agree that most people remember Lugosi's "bad" years more than anything else. Lugosi is, first and foremost, remembered as Dracula.

It's ironic that Bela's final years were so tough, personally and professionally, but that Landau won the Oscar for portraying Bela during that time. Like many, Lugosi's roughest times were some of the most interesting. It took a lot of guts to deal with his addiction so openly. Good for him.

Look at Bela. You can see so much love coming from this amazing man. He must of had a very kindred heart. I will always remember Bela as a part of my childhood that exposed me to an element of my senses that I don't think I ever really experienced prior to. I remember seeing Dracula for the very first time back in the 60's, and was absoluty terrified. He was a gift to us all. A beautiful human being who truly made a difference to the world.

R.I.P Your life story touched me, nobody can ever portrait Dracula the way you did.

That's often rumored, but never confirmed. I also heard Bela couldn't stand the weight of the costume, due to inoperable bullet(s) in his leg when he was on the Ski Patrol in the Carpathian Mountains during WWI. That's how he got addicted to pain-killers. More than likely, you change directors you change cast. Robert Florey wanted Lugosi as the scientist, the studio wanted him as the monster, and then Florey got replaced by James Whale, who casted Boris Karloff.

I think that his two best movies were Dracula an Bride of the Monster. I mean, who can't get choaked up at his I Have No Home speech in Bride, which was his last starring role.
