This was torture for Lou. He never forgave his wife for the death of their child by drowning, which she was responsible for. He was splitting with Abbott and life was real lousy. But the consumate professional he stuck this stupid surprise show out.

God bless both of them for the joythey gave all of us, and their unselfish war bond work during WWII.

You can tell Lou is uncomfortable. At the begining of this clip you can see it all over his face. I am sure he wanted to leave at the break and not come back.
May God keep them both.

The host is a unprepared dick, Lou seems quite embarrassed.

The "neither of us could sing" comment was a reference to Martin & Lewis, who had just broken up. As noted in Bud's comments, there was periodic friction between he and his partner and Bud did not want the act to ever break up. Sadly it did, right after the duo made their Las Vegas debut and Bud arrived onstage drunk, unable to perform the team's intricate wordplay routines. Once sober, he was devastated when Lou refused to ever work with him again. Costello died in 1959; Abbott in 1974.

This was filmed just a view month (or weeks?) before Bud and Lou finally split up. They were just great. Lou died only 2 years after this. He was so young. Great comedy - big tragedy.
