Actually, This 12 inch hooter whistle in this video is deeper toned than 1218's whistle. 1218 also wears a 12 inch hooter, but 475's 12 inch hooter is deeper toned and has a more 'dirty' sound to it. The reason 475's is deeper toned is because 1218's whistle would have a higher PSI. When I first heard 1218's whistle I thought it was an 8 inch hooter whistle because of it's tone.

Well, there were a few N&W steam locomotives equipped with 8 inch hooters. I think they were 2-8-2s or something...

And I also agree that the 12 inch hooter is pure N&W steam sound. When I hear the 8 inch, it sort of matches, but not really. The 8 inch hooter just doesn't sound like N&W steam.

And is there a way to find out which whistle she will be wearing on certain days ahead of time?

Actually, I've got a funny story for you jfeldman. Two years ago I went here, and I just HAPPENED to come there on a day that 475 was wearing her 12 inch. Then I thought: "why do I hear this deep toned whistle here when all those peoples' videos had these high pitched whistles?" I didn't know that 475 had a 12 inch or a 3 chime at the time. I thought that all those people who caught her in action with her 8 inch had a problem with their camera.

Also, I didn't say they should just throw the other whistles into the trash. I said they should normally put the 12 inch hooter whistle on 475, and sometimes switch it out for the 8 inch hooter or the 3 chime. I don't hate the other whistles, I just prefer the 12 inch hooter rather than any of 475's other whistles. Any whistle is fine, I just prefer the 12 inch hooter.
