The Loussier Trio has an outstanding DVD concert recording... recorded in Leipzig at St Thomas church where Bach was the Kappelmeister.

It would take a pretty ignorant sod to call a bass a cello... I always thought contrabass was a nice name, personally. Though I always call it a bass (or big ol') fiddle when talking to at least one friend. Nothing more funny then hearing him sputter "Don't call it that"... :)

I refer to it as an upright bass, and i've played it for both Bach and Jazz. But just as long as you dont call it a cello i'll be happy.

In Bach or in Jazz? :)

In this type of music its rather called upright base
timmi31 (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
Yes sure... it's a double bass. Actually all of them are fretless.

I think it is a fretless bass?

I just try to say that i think it's incomparable. The same origin or roots doesn't automaticly have to say that it's the same thing.
