Very, very cool. I have considered building one of my own, however I am skeptical of how well it would work for actually doing much more than engraving.

I'll second your well phrased comment, at 64 myself, I'm damned impressed too! This is a real nice project but the way capitalism works, we'll be buying the hobbyist's version right out of Shanghai in another few months.
Seems to me that some quality 10" drawer slides (accuride) might serve as better than the aluminum channels.
