This is Genesis at their finest. No commercial bullshit. It was unnecessary. These were the greatest compostions of the
20th century. You can see their naked souls through their music.

To make a long story short: Genesis was never a "commercial success" with this lineup. And this was during their artistic/musical peak from "Nursery Crime" to "The Lamb". Being artistic and musically adventurous doesn't pay the bills in our "era of mass stupidity". Thus, they wrote a couple of catchy pop-tunes (in the late 70's early 80's) with a mass appeal,and that was the end of "Epic Gensis" forever and always.
