Actor, writer, director, composer... He was all of them. Think of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Red Skelton... Now put them all together and make it a thousand times more brilliant and you have Chaplin. I would suggest you watch City Lights and if you have the money to buy at least one collection with a number of some of his films. I suggest "The Chaplin Revue" as it will give you a good idea of what a genius he was, him and his film 'family' (and even real family, his half-brother Sydney).

He was the best directer of the silent film era! He also acted in his movies and later did the soundtrack, but he's best known for directing.

Hm, I've heard of Charlie Chaplin, and I saw his wax dummy at the wax museum in New York, but who exactly was he? Was he an actor or a composer? Lately I've been getting into silent films and stuff, and movies from the 30's (mainly starring Mae West...that chick rox my socks), and 40's (The Philidelphia Story with Kath Hepburn and Cary Grant), so help would be greatly appreciated.
