i have personally always asked myself the same. why did nato choose the .223 when there are much better candidates ex 6.8 spc it may have slightly more recoil but nothing much more than the .223. i also think is should be considered to bring back the battle rifle and be given to a few of the soldiers in a unit for the added range and accuracy of the larger cartridge in personally i would never arm my men with the .223 it a varmin round.
