BTW I saw a partial scan of a "Dictionary of Vout" somewhere on the internet not too long ago. If you're a true afficionado, it's not exactly recommended -- much better to hear him in action. Or see him!! Slim on Youtube, three cheers.

I know Bulee hung out with the beats, but I really believe he belongs in a class by himself. I don't think of him as scat so much as sorcery, a beautiful obsolete sorcery directly opposite Yma Sumac ;)

P.S. Leo Watson scatted on Krupa's "Nagasaki." Dave Lambert and Buddy Stewart scatted on Krupa's "What's This."

"Krupa's scatting vocalist was Leo Watson, [who was] not white" Right, and that's an example of "white" audiences being exposed to scat singing, because Krupa had a big "white" following.

there was at least one clip up on YouTube a while back, the part where Van Morrisson reads from On The Road, but the clip has been removed. BBC: "release it on DVD-oreeni" I say!

"Yeah, the 'hipsters' and sophisticated city slickers knew about it, but that wasn't really a large audience." Many older people didn't particularly like jazz. Among young "white" and "black" people, up-to-date artists like Gene Krupa and Cab Calloway were stars, extremely well-known. Scat singing was around in vaudeville-ish music way back, jazz or not, and also went way back in country/rural music, where it was sometimes called "lilting."
