World Premiere of Helix - Composed by Esa-Pekka Salonen Valery Gergiev, conductor World Orchestra for Peace 28 August 2005 BBC Proms Royal Albert Hall, London In this highly inventive piece, Esa-Pekka Salonen creates one long musical spiral by speeding up the tempo but yet lengthening his phrases, building up such pressure until finally the music is pushed to the breaking point - and then stops. Mixed with his usual colorful, virtuosic orchestral writing, it's a crowdpleaser.

One thing I don't get is...why isn't Salonen conducting this?

I had no idea he even composed.

It's like a toothpick he's conducting with!

What a great emotionality at the end. Superb piece of music!

I agree with the majority of what has been said here - this is great music! It's like another world with other creatures. Everything I like about music!

Quelle usine à gaz ! Et puis d'accord avec les commentaires précédents qui disent que tout cela est bien conservateur. La nouvelle musique révolutionnaire du XXIè siècle est consonante.

Its very simple to be dismissive, anyone can be a critic.

Reall, really good stuff overall. I've never been the biggest fan of modern composition because everyone just tries to "out-weird" the other with very bizzare harmonies and melodies. It has a very sci-fi take to it. Wouldn't be surprised if excerpts get used in some alien film in the near future. As a music major, I'm just curious what kind of insane harmony he studied to create a piece like this, as well as his crazy solo piano composositions.

This is the first piece of Salonen's Ive heard and i love it! it is amazingly atmospheric; bugger-off anyone who say "its boring, its been done before, its too dissonent, its not dissonent enough". this is a lovely piece of music!!

Heads up - I don't think the word "bore" works as a standalone noun, therefore, "work of bore" doesn't actually make sense.
