I do think the war helped, but not in the way FDR is given credit for. Look at the world after WWII. Industry was destroyed in all countries but the US. If you were French and wanted to buy a refrigerator you really had not choice but to buy a US made one.

The Classical Economist were closer to the truth than Keynes. Under both Hoover and FDR there was massive intervention in the economy that prevented recovery. For example, FDR created a 90% tax bracket. People reacted by taking their money out of business investments and into municipal bods that were tax exempt. People stopped investing the economy under FDR.

stanleythughes, first off, I'm glad we're engaging in meaningful discourse, rather than about birthers or death panels, ty. So you make a good point, but I think to say that FDR's New Deal, or the war, played no role in getting us out of the depression would be exaggerating. Keynesians make a good argument and I really think they debunked the classical economists of the time who said the economy would self correct itself & when FDR went back to a balanced budget, the economy stopped recovering.

My meaning, which wasn't too difficult to discern, was that if you were satisfied with that embarrassing comment then there's no point in us *engaging* in conversation. 'Ad hominem' is a great term, but it clearly doesn't apply to my previous responses. Go on, have another look at them. The first was a piece of advice, the second explained why your stance is so counterproductive, the third was satire and the fourth an explanation of why this conversation won't continue.
