What I said below stands. Of course the show is a comedy, and Barney is a decent lovable nice guy...but his "cop" skills and attitudes are a satire on small men with big egos pulling power trips. If you really don't know or have never met cops (or others in authority) who are officious and ull of them selves, then you don't know many people. lol To those that object to this bit of truth, is that an indication that the "shoe" may fit you! Andy, is cool and secure. *That's* the role model.

Lord people barney made the show a natural in comedy He is so hilarious and so good at it.I loved watching this show back then and I'm in my 30's i still crack up watching it.

Barney so typifies the bad cop who is both incompetent and full of himself (and it usually is a male). In a TV show about Mayberry and with a sane and competent boss like Sheriff Andy there; Barney is indeed a hilarious joke. Sadly, it seems that people like Barney have gravitated to the top of too many police and military and political positions of power. The combination of arrogance and incompetence is costing us all dearly.
