Barney must have gone to public school in a northern state. Maybe New York or Massachusetts, or maybe Maine or Rhode Island.

he was alwasy Andy's cousin...it was only mentioned once in the pilot episode. Barney was thanking Andy for picking him as deputy, and how Andy did the right thing by going through all the other people and picked the best man for the job then he said " I want to thank you again cousin Andy" big laugh......Barney was only going to be a bit part, but Don Knots did such a good job they made the role bigger just for him.

this is the show in a nut shell to people riding the clock... with their personal affairs... take the squad car on dates lie cheat and steal to keep your job.. when cornered lie...act like your working when you think theire gonna be inspection... etc.. and their suppose to be holsome people lol....

I would put that "sit com" against any of our tv dramas today. It has the aire of classic.
