From the first episode, Don Knotts as Barney visits Andy in Greenwood, NC - except this is not Andy Taylor. Goober & Emment also appeared in this episode but Barney is never called by any name. Weird! More classic TV: http://www.TVparty.com

Where is the rest of this episode? Just this little clip looks strange. I would like to see the whole thing.

What was the episode where Barney said, "Can I shoot him, Andy? Can I shoot him?!"

As a late answer if you never got one... Don Knotts as Barney was the first. He and Andy were cousins. After about 5 seasons Barney got a job with the Raleigh Police Department and was later replaced by Warren (comedian Jack Burns of "Burns and Shriver) although sometimes Andy would go to Raleigh to visit Barney or Barney would come visit Andy in Mayberry. So he still played a recurring role throughout the rest of the series.

After a certain point, Andy and Don were incomplete performers without each other. Andy couldn't play Andy and Don couldn't play Barney unless Andy and Don played Andy and Barney. They each created and played the two characters, they didn't exist separately. Thank you so much for posting this.

That's one of several stories, and I think it's basically accurate. Andy and Don have each given separate explanations, including that one. They were always very gracious towards each other, so I think they went carefully on some aspects of why Don left (for professional reasons). They may not have even agreed precisely on it, but it clearly didn't affect their personal or professional friendship. Interesting subject.

Without a doubt, one of the strangest, most inexplicable crossovers in sitcom history. The original AGS would never have done this, at least during the first five seasons.
