Check out Gillian Welch's "Time (The Revelator)," which tilts its hat to this Blind Willie song.

swearing has gone from the religious ("taking the lords name in vain etc, e.g. "jesus christ" or "oh my god") to the bodily ("fuck" "shit" "piss" "cunt") for some reason or another.
im not disagreeing with you entirely, but who can say these words dont have meaning in themselves? true, the context and usage adds clarification.
some people are offended when i refer to my friends (affectionately) as "cunt," or dare i say it, "nigger." they couldnt care less about the context.

No argument regarding idiocy, however your contention that "most people thought the world was flat" is based on false information, largely the result of a book by Andrew Dickson White published back in 1896. People were so eager to believe that the folks in the middle ages were idiots that they bought White's spurious writings without a second thought. "Lil education goes a long way."

you'd be right if it wasn't, at least in part, the truth. but proof is in the comments. people fight tooth and nail to defend an idea that's wrong, at least when it comes to cursing. they don't understand the usage as it is in the bible so they apply it incorrectly. if they understand the terms and usage of language, they'd know that swearing is a modern social construct and not the same thing as cursing in the past. lil education goes a long way. |
