Rachmaninov plays his famous prelude. Recorded in 1919 on Ampico system. Ampico was the most advanced version of piano roll's systems which contained also track with recorded dynamics in hexadecimal code. In 90's it was transfered to PC and reproduced by Boesendorfer 290SE piano. You can see that piano here on my previous post http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

The records could be compared to MP3, whereas the piano rolls are like MIDI. MIDI does not record audio, only which notes are played, the use of the damper pedal, and dynamics. Some organs can record MIDI, and include registration and swell operation.

The early rolls did not capture the dynamics, the later ones did. MIDI could do better, but had to wait several decades.

Genial!Really great music, composer, pianist. The chromatic texture is fantastic. The music is too original and creative.I imagine the Moscow buildings and monuments, the Red Square, the bells of Churches,St.Basil Cathedral, etc.

They are the sets of 5 lines. See at 2:32 when the camera zooms out? This is because the pianist is playing all 4 sets of 5 "lines" at the same time.

Well, it's not common for most pieces, only the very "heavy" ones, where you're required to play with both hands at the very bottom of the piano, then to jump up higher with both hands, that would be just a large black mess on the middle of the paper on two bars, with all those changes and huge chords and everything. So, it is to make the chords clearer, sort of =)
