Common for many actors. Gene Kelly had a huge ego as did Lou Costello.

They had a special on Mr. Jolson and even his friends said that he could be very cruel and also sometimes very nice.

Stories of his ego were legendary.
He had been starring in a broadway show, it had been running a while and he was getting tired of it, probbaly more tired of sharing the stage with other performers. He would often stop the show dead and say "Listen folks , you all know how this play will end, and then told the whole ending of the play. Then he told the audience to sit back and relax, and he stood there on stage and performed every number he knew for about 3 hours. The audiences loved it

Jolson was probably the first "Superstar" in show business. Recordings, concerts, radio, broadway, movies. He was a star in all of them.
He loved nothing more than to just get on stage and perform, and the crowds loved him.

that was all of them in those days, al jolson, the rat pack all of them had egos, doesnt mean they werent nice people, hell jolson fought against discrimination against black people, so i agree he was a great entertainer but i dont think just because he had a huge ego means he wasnt a nice person
