I meant the whole song from the movie- I think the song he was singing in that clip was called "The Spaniard That Blighted My Life".

By the way, today (May 26th, 2008) is the unofficial 122nd anniversary of his birth in 1886. I say "unofficial" because Jolie didn't really know his exact birthdate as they didn't keep a record of it in his home country and he chose the date for himself ... :o)

My roommate Lisa also loves the Jolson movies and to me, Jolson remains the greatest entertainer of all time. Those who think he was racist couldn't be more wrong. Singing in blackface was quite common in those days, and both black people and white people did that. Whatever people may feel about that nowadays, it's history and the only thing to do is learn from it.

I grew up with the Jolson music. I first heard it from an impersonator on vacation in Wildwood Crest, NJ when I was very little and Mom taught me "California Here I Come" as we prepared for a trip there in 1975. Hahah!! I once read a Jolie biography and my ex in-laws refused to believe that was really Jolie in the "Swanee" scene, no matter what I said. Their loss. I have The Jazz Singer on video and recently got this one and Jolson Sings Again on DVD when my videos gave out.

What a great find - this is super rare! Even IMDB doesn't have a trailer for this movie.
I noticed the sync was not too great in the trailer but you can't have everything.

"The Cantor" by AJ is beautiful. With all the respect due, I'd prefer hearing him do the song than a Synagogue Cantor. Although, I'm sure he sang in that setting many, many times.
Jolson's "cantorial" side is so compelling that it can make people put aside their understandeable outrage over the "Minstrel" stuff [which I believe Jolson handled respectfully and professionally for the time]. |
