Before Elvis Presley recorded this tune ( most associate Elvis and the tune synonymously), it was a hit by the great Al Jolson! Elvis Presley's manager's wife suggested that Elvis do the tune (because it was a favorite of hers) and respectfully (you will notice) Elvis did not stray from the original arrangement by the GREAT... Al Jolson, even including the spoken words loosely based on Jaques' speech in Shakespeare's play, "As You Like It", Act II - Scene VII: "All the world's a stage, and all men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts." It was recorded on April 28th, 1950, and a hit for Al Jolson late in his career in 1950!

I was all set to give this five stars. Instead, I gave it one star. Here's why: your video accompaniement ranges from being a mere distraction from the song, which is the feature, to becoming a downright indictment having nothing to do with Jolson's interpretation of the song. The fact may be that he was a difficult SOB in life, but he was no hater, no racist, and on stage, he was pure art, love, and honest sincerity. This video spoils the song and dishonors jews, blacks and Jolson, period.

I agree with you ByGoneBlues. I love Elvis's version...it's something about his voice that just leaves me in awe as I hear the song and after it too. Al Jolson doesn't sing it bad either, he was after all the original but I prefer Elvis's version...

Jolson makes you feel the song.

Elvis did this song a favor to his manager, the famous Col. Tom Parker, who was a great, great Jolson fan.

This is from a huge fan of Elvis. Anyone who listens to this, then the version from Elvis, and concludes Elvis is better, just is not an objective listener. Frankly, when I heard Elvis do the spoken section, I never believed it. Al Jolson nailed it. He was emotional and the listener felt his sorrow. Elvis was great, but come on, this is a "no brainer".

Thanks for the clip, I didn't know about the Jolson version. Considering Presley's vocal style and the arrangement, it's obvious that he was chennelling the Ink Spots in his recording.
