Lyrics to Smile—Words by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons and music by Charlie Chaplin
Smile was the theme music for Charlie Chaplin‘s final silent picture Modern Times in 1936. In 1954, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics to Charlie Chaplin’s music, and it become a popular hit when Nat ‘King’ Cole recorded it. (Ringtone—Nat King Cole singing ‘Smile’)
Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
<instrumental interlude>
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
You can hear Robert Downey Jr. sing this on the "Chaplin" movie soundtrack.
