Our story takes place at a dinner many years ago, in honor of the then-newly elected prsident of the University of Chicago, Dr. Robert M. Hutchins.
A visiting professor, who did not know the new president, remarked to the lady next to him, "So that is the new president!"
The lady replied coldly, "I beg your pardon, but do you know who I am?"
The visiting professor admitted his ignorance.
"I," replied the woman with pardonable pride, "am Mr.s Hutchins."
The visiting professor, taken aback, replied "I’m very sorry. Do you know who I am?"
Mrs. Hutchins shook her head negatively.
"Thank God!" said the visiting professor as he moved away.
