Desert Island - I Love Lucy season 6, originally aired November 26, 1956

Desert Island continues the I Love Lucy “trip to Florida” story arc, where Ricky Ricardo’s (Desi Arnaz) band is performing in Florida, and his wife Lucy (Lucille Ball) and their best friends Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley and Vivian Vance) are enjoying a vacation there.  As part of Ricky’s performing at the hotel, he and Fred have been invited to judge a bathing beauty contest—and to Ethel’s consternation, Lucy is fine with that.  Lucy has decided to turn over a new leaf, and be more understanding of how Ricky’s job requires him to be surrounded at times by attractive girls—until the two young, very attractive girls come to their hotel room looking for Ricky and Fred.  Lucy’s new attitude promptly goes out the window, and she tries to convince the young girls that the boys are gone for an unknown amount of time—until they re-enter the room from the bathroom.

Lucy is not about to give up so easily, however, and has a plan to prevent Ricky and Fred from attending that bathing beauty contest.  Ricky and Fred are planning on taking them on a boat tour before the contest, and Lucy has arranged to have only half a tank of gas in the boat, so that when it’s time for them to return to shore for the contest, the boat will run out of gasoline.  How will they get back to shore?  Once Lucy is certain that the boys have missed the contest, Lucy will ‘discover’ a supply of gasoline in a thermos.  Unfortunately, while she and Ethel are off getting suntan lotion, the boys discover the gasoline and—not realizing that the tank is half empty—leave it on the dock, since gasoline should only be kept in an approved container.  Out at sea, Lucy’s plan works—until she reveals that she knew about the gasoline, and blurts out her entire plan.  Fortunately, the ship is drifting toward an island ...

On that island, Lucy spies ‘giant’ footprints, which the boys laugh off—until they meet a ‘native’, who turns out to be actor Claude Akins, who’s filming a documentary about the history of Florida.  Ricky and Fred convince Claude to help them turn the tables on Lucy and Ethel, having Claude pretend to be a native who’s going to carry off Lucy.  After a few moments of panic, everything is revealed, and they’re all invited to a luau that the film crew is going to be throwing at the end of filming.  Even the bathing beauties show up, and let Ricky and Fred know that the contest has been rescheduled for the following day.

Desert Island is available on DVD as part of the I Love Lucy season 6 DVD collection, as well as on the complete I Love Lucy DVD collection.

Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): [to Lucy] He’s been lookin’ at his watch all afternoon. Fred, will you forget about that beauty contest?
Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Huh? That’s the farthest thing from my mind.

Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Half bast bathing beauty! Uh, I mean half past three!

[after running out of gas in the middle of the ocean]
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): You’re right! We’re out of gas.
Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Oh no! Now what are we supposed to do? Thumb a ride on a passing halibut?

[Lucy and Ethel think they’re being attacked by a native of the island]
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Maybe I’d better talk to him.
