The drooping flowers is one of my favorite clown props, and one that I use all of the time. The basic effect is that the flower (made of feathers or something similar) appears normal, but a simple movement causes it to droop on command. It can, of course, be used in a variety of ways. I normally use it either by itself, or as part of something larger as a ‘special magic wand’—I explain to the audience that it’s a magical flower, because I haven’t watered it since I bought it, and it’s still perfectly healthy! As I do this, I’m making eye contact with the audience, and intentionally not looking at the flower which is now drooping. The kids love to point out that it’s wilting, and as I turn my gave to the flower, I make it stand upright. “What do you mean? There’s nothing wrong!” I reply, turning my head to the audience (making the flower wilt as I do so). I’ll repeat this once more (the rule of three is in full effect at all times), and then I finally notice, and then have the children help me to help the flower.
How do we ‘help the flower’? In a variety of ways, depending on what venue we’re doing. At a birthday party, I might have the birthday child blow on it (as a tie-in to blowing out the candles on the birthday cake) - especially if it’s my ‘clown breath’ that made it wilt in the first place! Or, I might use a Lota bowl or Lota vase to ‘magically’ produce water for the flower. Or, the children might say a magic word. Or, if it’s a gospel event, I might read a Bible verse to the flower (the ‘words of Life’) and have it recover. Or .... well, you get the idea. The only limit is your imagination.
In the same way, don’t let this be the only use for the drooping flower, either. For instance, a hobo clown might hold on to it as a present for an Auguste or whiteface clown (of the opposite sex) and the flower progressively wilts more and more as she refuses him more and more. Or, you could use it as a ‘visual barometer’ of hope or faith. Or ... well, you get the idea.
