Going in Style starring George Burns, Art Carney, Lee Strasberg
Going in Style is many things. It is a commentary on how American society treats their aging citizens. It is a wonderful acting vehicle for George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg - George Burns won an Oscar for his performance. It is a funny movie, but it is not a happy movie.
The basic premise is that three old friends, Joe (George Burns), Al (Art Carney) and Willie (Lee Strasberg), are living together, barely making ends meet on their Social Security checks - and have no reason to live. In an attempt to put some excitement into their lives, they hatch a plot to rob a bank. To their surprise, it works! The movie then leaves them to deal with the question, Now what? Despite their success, they still have nothing to live for, and are still waiting to die ... and one of them does. The movie ends with the last surviving member of the ‘gang’ going off to prison, and looking forward to it, since the younger inmates are treating him like royalty in hopes of finding out where the money is found.
Not a comedy in the standard sense, but worth watching.
Product Description of Going in Style starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg
Three senior citizens in their 70s who live together are slowly decaying in endless days with nothing to do but feed the birds. One of them comes up with an idea - rob a bank. They certainly could use the money if they get away with it, and if they are caught, what could happen to three old men?
