Lucy Wants New Furniture - I Love Lucy episode 63, originally aired 6/1/1953, seasons 2
A very funny I Love Lucy episode starts with Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) (again!) wanting new furniture, which she goes ahead and purchases without her husband Ricky’s (Desi Arnaz) knowledge or consent. Deciding to break it gently to him, Lucy (with the help of Ethel Mertz, played by Vivian Vance) move all of the new furniture into the kitchen. This leads to a funny routine where Lucy ‘surprises’ Ricky by having dinner in the living room, and when Ricky asks for things such as salt, or butter, and Lucy has to dash to the Mertzes apartment, since she can’t navigate through her kitchen. Soon Ricky finds out what’s going on, and he ‘puts his foot down’—he’ll keep the new furniture at his club until she can pay for it from her allowance.
Lucy then decides to become comically frugal, to the point of making her own dresses and doing her own permanent—both with ridiculous failures. The final joke is also visual, as Lucy demonstrates that she cut a little too deep—and lifts up a section of the rug in the shape of her dress!
A very funny episode, with much visual humor, Lucy Wants New Furniture is available on the I Love Lucy season 2 DVD collection.
Funny quotes from Lucy Wants New Furniture—I Love Lucy
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Ask Mr. Ricardo, or as he is more commonly known, Senor Tightwad.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Butter? On bread?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Yeah.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I’ll never get used to your strange Cuban dishes.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): You gonna just leave this great big hole in the room?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): It’s better than a great big hole in my head.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [on her homemade dress] I was hoping it would look different after I tried it on.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): It looks different all right.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): You don’t need to be nasty. After all, I made it with my own two hands!
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): It looks like you made it with your own two feet!
