Lucy’s Last Birthday—I Love Lucy season 2, episode 60, originally aired May 11, 1953
Lucy’s Last Birthday is a very sweet episode of I Love Lucy—the basic premise is that Lucy has decided to stop celebrating her birthday, since it only means that she’s getting older, and she doesn’t want anyone to remember her birthday—until nobody remembers her birthday except Mrs. Trumball, her neighbor. In actuality, Ricky, Fred and Ethel are planning a surprise party for Lucy at Ricky’s club, but Lucy is unaware—and throws herself a pity party, going for a walk and meeting with a Salvation Army-type group, The Friends of the Friendless, and with their support, she goes to confront ‘heartless’ Ricky at the club—only to discover the planned party, where Ricky serenades her with the I Love Lucy theme song, the only time that the words are sung on the entire series.
Highlights include Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance) trying to not “spill the beans” about the birthday party while visiting with Lucy - while Lucy’s humming “Happy birthday to you”. Another cute scene is where Lucy is trying to cure her hiccups by holding her breath for 20 seconds—only to find out that Mrs. Trumball’s watch isn’t working. Later, she throws herself a birthday party that none of her friends can attend—since they’re all at Ricky’s club, waiting to surprise her. Another funny moment comes when one of the ‘Friends of the Friendless’ gives his ‘testimony’—which Lucy ‘borrows’ when she goes to confront Ricky at his club—and finds all of her friends waiting for her at her birthday party.
Lucy’s Last Birthday is available on the season 2 I Love Lucy DVD collection.
