Off to Florida - I Love Lucy season 6, episode 6, originally aired November 12, 1956
Off to Florida begins with Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) preparing for her upcoming trip to Florida, where her husband Ricky’s (Desi Arnaz) band is going to play. This gives her an opportunity to to go shopping, and an opportunity for Ricky to highlight her forgetfulness, and lay the groundwork for the conflict of the episode. The boys (Ricky, Ricky Jr. and Fred Mertz/William Frawley) are going to Florida three days early in order to go fishing, with Lucy and her best friend Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance) coming by train later. Unless, of course, Lucy happens to lose the tickets ...
Which, of course, she does, and after some verbal jostling the ladies settle on the idea of sharing expenses on a road trip (coincidentally, this is the same plot as the Laurel and Hardy short film Going Bye-Bye!), and they begin their cross-country trip with a grey-haired woman, Mrs. Grundy (played by the famous actress Elsa Lanchester). The road trip is a comedy of errors, as Mrs. Grundy doesn’t want to stop to eat, or stay at a motel. In fact, when they have a flat tire, Mrs. Grundy takes a nap, leaving Lucy and Ethel to change the flat tire. This segment is slapstick gold, as the two ladies don’t have a clue as to how to change a tire. Eventually, they get back on the road, and while Mrs. Grundy is away sleeping Lucy hears a radio report that a grey-haired hatchet murderer has escaped from New York City and is heading south—and since she saw a hatchet in Mrs. Grundy’s trunk, she quickly jumps to the conclusion that it must be Mrs. Grundy. Of course, later Mrs. Grundy listens to the radio while Lucy and Ethel are sleeping in the car and hears that a grey-haired hatchet murderer has escaped from New York, has dyed her hair red and is traveling south with a blond companion. She, of course, jumps to the same conclusion about Lucy and Ethel.
Things come to a head shortly afterward, as they stop at a roadside diner, with both of them planning to call the police. It’s again comedy gold as each of them tries to pantomime to the clerk that the other is a murderer, ending with Mrs. Grundy leaving the girls behind. The good news is, the actual hatchet murderer has already been captured, and the bad news is that Lucy and Ethel have to hitchhike the rest of the way to Miami. At the train station, Lucy wants to put up a brave front, until Ricky informs her that she actually arrived an hour before the train—and it turns out that Little Ricky has put her train tickets into his new wallet for safe keeping.
Off to Florida is available on the I Love Lucy Season 6 DVD set.
Funny movie quotes from Off to Florida - I Love Lucy
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Don’t tell me you’ve lost your key again.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Certainly not. I haven’t lost it, I just couldn’t find it.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Hey, look Ricky, Mommy bought you a bathing suit.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): That’s mine!
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Yours?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Relax, it stretches when it’s on.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): See that it does.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [showing Little Ricky his new wallet] See, just like Daddy’s.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Just like Daddy’s, there won’t be any money in it.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Have I ever lost any train tickets before?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Yes.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Have I ever lost any train tickets to Florida before?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): We’ve never been to Florida before.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Well, there you are.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Now Ethel, don’t get panicky, I’ll find them.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Lucy, don’t tell me you’ve lost our train tickets!
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Don’t get panicky Ethel. [leaves the room, frantic searching sounds are heard, Lucy re-enters] Ehtel?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): What?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Get panicky.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): It’s really quite roomy, isn’t it, Ethel?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Roomy isn’t the word for it - the word for it is ‘cramped’.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): What’s she doing with a hatchet?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [imitating Edna] Oh didn’t I tell you to bring a hatchet?
Radio announcer: And now for the latest bulletin in the Evelyn Holmby case. Police believe that Evelyn Holmby, famous gray haired hatchet murderess, who escaped from New York State Prison, Thursday, to be heading south in a cream colored convertible coupe. Now back to our regular program.
[Lucy turns off the radio]
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): What’d you turn it off for?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Did you hear what he said?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Yeah so what?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Which way are we heading?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): South.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Exactly. Gray haired, cream colored convertible.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Oh Lucy, that’s just a coincidence.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): But think, it all fits. Likes to drive around in the dark, won’t stop at motels, uses back roads. Just why do you suppose she uses back roads?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): She told us, to save time.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Oh sure, she uses back roads to avoid the police!
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Oh Lucy, the woman they’re looking for is a hatchet murderess. She doesn’t look like a…
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), Ethel Mertz: Hatchet!
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): We’re just jumping to conclusions. She brought the hatchet along to uh… to uh…
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): To what? Chop watercrest? Ethel that woman definitely has a criminal face. She’s REALLY that Evelyn Holmby the police are looking for.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): No!
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Yes! And we’ve got to make a break for it.
Mrs. Edna Grundy (Elsa Lanchester): I was just admiring your hair, do you dye?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): [waking up] WHO DIED?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): My hair.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Well, we got here, didn’t we?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Yeah, on a poultry truck with 85 live chickens.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): I found your tickets in LIttle Ricky’s wallet.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): You what?
Little Ricky (Keith Thibodeaux): You said you wanted them in a safe place, Mommy.
