Pregnant Women are Unpredictable - I Love Lucy episode 51, season 2, originally aired 12/15/1952

Pregnant Women are Unpredictable begins with a very pregnant Lucy Ricardo practicing giving a baby a bath with a baby doll - a silent clown skit that’s absolutely hilarious!  When her husband, Ricky Ricardo, comes home they begin having a discussion about baby names, since Lucy keeps changing her mind.  Ricky finally gets her to go to bed, and the next morning Ricky decides to pamper his pregnant wife by making breakfast for her in bed.  It’s a very funny scene, as he keeps calling her out to the kitchen to find the various items that he needs, only to chide her to lay down and rest once she does.

Fred Mertz (William Frawley) comes in through the back door and starts commiserating with Ricky about the unpredictability of pregnant women—and helps Ricky cook breakfast for Lucy.  Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance) comes over to visit Lucy, and Lucy shows her the single charred waffle that the boys made for her.  The ladies go into the kitchen to start cleaning up, since it looks like a tornado has hit the kitchen.  Lucy realizes that Ricky never made breakfast in bed for her before, and mistakenly thinks that Ricky loves the baby, not her.  “I’ll be just like a salmon, I’ll swim upstream, spawn, and never be heard from again.”

Ricky makes everything worse by bringing home presents for the baby.  Ethel talks to Ricky, and he decides to shower Lucy with attention, sending her a corsage, candy, and calls her from work to invite her to come to the club for dinner and dancing.  At the club, along with the Mertzes, Ricky and Lucy are having a wonderful time ...  but when Ricky doesn’t mention the baby all night, she fears that he doesn’t love the baby!

Pregnant Women are Unpredictable is available as part of the season 2 I Love Lucy DVD collection.

Quotes from I Love Lucy - Pregnant Women are Unpredictable

Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I want the names to be unique and euphonious.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Okay. Unique if it’s a boy, and Euphonious if it’s a girl.

Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball):What about ‘Phillip’ for a boy?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): [brandishing a cigarette] or Morris if it’s a girl?

Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Oh boy, I love to dance, but I’m a little out of condition.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): A little out of condition? He puffed so hard it’s like dancing with a steam engine.
Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Steam engines puff hard when they’re pushing a heavy load.

Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): While you’re at it, why don’t you take another couple along with you...just to make it a happy foursome.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Do you have anyone in mind?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): We’d love to!

Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): After the baby’s born, I’ll just be forgotten.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Oh, that’s not true.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): It is too true. I’ll be just like a salmon. I’ll swim upstream, spawn and never be heard from again.
