review of The Fixer Uppers (1935), a Laurel and Hardy video starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Mae Busch
The Fixer Uppers begins with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy going door to door, attempting to sell greeting cards that they’ve made themselves - illustrations by Oliver, and verses by Stanley—such as they are— “Twas Christmas Day in the poorhouse, and the boys were feeling blue, the boys in gray were fighting, a Merry Christmas to you.” Their first potential customer, an inebriate, finally agrees to buy one of their cards. Their next customer is a weeping woman (played by Mae Busch), who fears that her husband no longer loves her. At Stanley’s suggestion, she comes upon the idea of having Ollie pretend to be her lover, in order to get her husband jealous. In a hilarious routine, she demonstrates on Stanley how to kiss properly, knocking him off his feet. It’s a very funny extended kissing scene, with Oliver Hardy milking it for all it’s worth, going from uncomfortable to annoyed to checking his watch. Stanley returns the favor, with his potent kiss knocking her unconscious! “Well, she started it!” No sooner do they succeed in resuscitating her than her husband comes home, who proves to be more than jealous - a French painter, he challenges Oliver to a duel to the death with pistols.
Oliver and Stan are drowning their sorrows in alcohol, when Stanley comes up with the idea that Oliver doesn’t have to show up for the duel; after all, the painter doesn’t know their names or where they live. Oliver’s spirits rise, and using the card that the painter gave him, he calls him up to inform him that he won’t be there - and Stan decides to do his part in taunting the man as well. The drunkard from earlier in the film appears, and soon all three of them are passed out. The police arrive, and deposit them at their “home”—based on the card in Oliver’s pocket, of course, returning the boys back to the last place on earth that they want to be.
The painter and his wife arrive later, and after his wife’s professing that she has no feelings for Oliver he almost believes her - until he hears Stan and Ollie bickering in her bed! The duel is on, in a very funny scene, since the wife whispers in Oliver’s ear that she’s loaded both guns with blanks. All Oliver has to do is pretend to die when he’s shot! Until, of course, the husband declares that he’s going to cut up the body in order to dispose of it. The short film ends with Oliver crashing through the front door to escape, with the mad painter right behind him ... switching to a scene on the street where the painter, chasing after Oliver, is unsure of which way to go, and just picks a direction at random. After he’s gone, Stan knocks on the lid of a garbage can to tell the hidden Ollie that it’s all clear and safe to come out now. However, he’s just a little too late, as Stan and the audience watch Oliver riding away in the back of a garbage truck, covered in garbage.
The Fixer Uppers is a very funny Laurel and Hardy short film, and i rate it 4 clowns out of 5.
Funny movie quotes from the Laurel and Hardy movie, The Fixer Uppers
Stanley (Stan Laurel): If you had a face like mine, you’d punch me right in the nose! And I’m just the feller that can do it!
Oliver (Oliver Hardy): Now, you’re right up our alley! We have a number here which I think is one of Stanley’s tenderest thoughts. Now, just listen to this: “A merry Christmas, husband/ Happy New Year’s nigh!/ I wish you Easter greetings/ Hooray for the Fourth of July!” Now, we call that our “four-in-one” card.
Stanley (Stan Laurel): Yes, Ma’am. You can use it all the year ‘round.
Mrs. Pierre Gustave (Mae Busch): No, thanks. I’m still not interested.
