The French Revue—I Love Lucy season 3, originally aired October 15, 1954

The French Revue is actually an I Love Lucy episode with a twist—Lucy comes up with a good idea for Ricky’s show—a French revue—and feels that she is entitled to a part in the show, since it’s her idea.  Ricky, however, does not see it that way; in fact, to keep her from trying to worm her way into the show, he orders the people at the club to not let her into the building.  This leads to a $50 bet between Ricky and Lucy—she insists that she’ll get into the building, and into the show!  The episode revolves around the bet, and Lucy’s various attempts to sneak into the club.

Lucy’s various attempts at sneaking into the club are comedy gold, one silent skit following another as Lucy attempts to get into the building disguised as a workman carrying furniture to a giant cello being smuggled in by Ethel Mertz in disguise—all of which are foiled.  On opening night, however, Lucy’s true plan comes into play—she enters the building disguised as an elderly patron, who strips out of her disguise to join the chorus girls in the opening number—and wins her $50 from a deflated Ricky, who has to admit defeat.

A wonderful, funny episode that I strongly recommend.  The French Review is available as part of the I Love Lucy Season 3 DVD collection.

Funny quotes from The French Revue—I Love Lucy

Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Ethel, did you ever take a good look into his eyes?  He has dollar signs instead of pupils.

Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Am I too late?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Yes, years too late.
