The Tour—I Love Lucy season 4, originally aired 5/30/1955
A very funny part of the I Love Lucy Hollywood story arc. Lucy and Ethel go on a sightseeing tour bus, where Lucy gets on the wrong side of the bus driver. Lucille Ball’s friend, Barbara Pepper, gets some screen time as the overweight passenger who tries to sit on Lucy in order to get her seat! This very funny part of the episode ends when Lucy and Ethel get off by Richard Widmark’s house (this week’s guest celebrity), and Lucy decides to sneak into his house and get one of the grapefruit growing in his backyard as a souvenir. This backfires, as Lucy gets trapped in the backyard.
Lucy tries to sneak through the house in order to go out the front door, when she hears Richard Widmark coming. She attempts to hide in his sitting room, which is filled with various hunting trophies. Into the room comes Richard Widmark, along with his guest—Ricky Ricardo! They are talking about the strange, almost stalking behavior of Ricky’s wife, Lucy! Ricky is trying to warn Richard Widmark about the extremes to which Lucy is willing to go—and Lucy is reacting to their ‘insulting’ comments, while living them out!
A very funny episode, and recommended. The Tour is available as part of the I Love Lucy Season 4 DVD collection.
Funny quotes from The Tour—I Love Lucy
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): I don’t like that tone. You are planning something.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): There’s no law about me going to Romanov’s. Perhaps maybe stopping by your table and…
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Lucy, if I so much as see your face at Romanov’s, I’m gonna wrap you up in brown paper and mail you back to New York. And that’s an ultimatum.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): An ultimatum? I’m not surprised.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I am. I didn’t think he knew how to pronounce it.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Will you at least wait for us?
Bus Driver: Go ahead. TRY me.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): “Go ahead. TRY me”.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I wish there were a place to sit where we could see both sides.
Bus Driver: There is.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Where?
Bus Driver: I can strap you to the front of the bus.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Well.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [a large woman has just sat on Lucy] Madam, it doesn’t seem to be getting through to you, but this seat is taken.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [trying to get back over wall, pursued by guard dog] Oh, no, he’s got my shoe!
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): That’s your good shoe! Is he chewing it up.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [looks] Nope. He swallowed it whole.
