biography of Red Skelton, America’s favorite clown—good night, and God bless
An obituary for Red Skelton, America's greatest clown (in my humble opinion). Red Skelton made his mark in TV, Radio, movies and live appearances.Reading this was a chore and a bore. It states"facts" in contradiction to statements made by Mr. Red Skelton himself. In other words, this article lies.
Posted by on 05/21 at 12:08 PMCare to name anything inaccurate? If you would like to specify anything false (with sources for your information), I’ll cheerfully correct it. If not, since a sizeable part of the article are quotes from Mr. Skelton himself, I’ll assume that you just enjoy complaining :)
Posted by Tom Raymond, aka Raynbow on 05/22 at 08:22 AMI think the only error is a minor one. Red always said “may God Bless”. I remember him explaining on a talk show that he said “may” because who was he to tell God what to do>
Posted by on 06/13 at 12:47 AMJust as an FYI, Mrs Red Skelton donated about $3,000,000 worth of artifacts to Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana. A Red Skelton Museum is now in the process of being built to house the collection which includes among other things, his costumes including the “mean widdle kid” “Clem” “Freddie the Freeloader” and others. I have personally viewed the collection which is vast. There’s the stool he used to do his “Guzzler’s Gin” routine and the twin bed he wrote much of his material while sitting on.
A couple of years ago, Vincennes University built a $17,000,000 building called the Red Skelton Preforming Arts Center. There is link to that on Red Skelton’s website.
For the last two years on the second Saturday in June, Vincennes, IN has hosted a parade called “A Parade of a 1000 Clowns” where we invite clowns from all over the United States to come and walk in a parade honoring Mr Skelton. Last year, we had over 300 clowns from all over the Midwest here to participate in the parade.
Thanks for your comments on the clowns.
I’ve really enjoyed them. I’m a novice Shrine clown and thoroughly enjoy entertaining kids.Jack Masters
