The Club Election - I Love Lucy episode 47, season 2, originally aired 2/16/1953
A ‘flashback’ episode, filmed before Lucy gave birth, that starts with Ethel coming to the Ricardo’s apartment looking for Lucy, since their ladies Wednesday afternoon club is meeting on Friday—this leads into a trip down memory lane, to the last time their club held elections ... when Lucy was certain that she would be elected to one of the offices. It’s a very funny bit, as we can watch Lucy’s face time and time again as she thinks she’s about to be nomiated ... and then isn’t. The final straw is when Ethel is about to be elected Preisent unanimously ... and Lucy tries to rescue her ego by having her friend nominate Lucy for President as well.
As you can imagine, a not-so-subtle campaign begins to turn unfriendly. leading to some hurt feelings between the two and some strong rivalry that pulls Ricky and Fred in as well. Ricky and Fred, however, are each campaigning for their wives to lose, however, wanting to not lose their time with them. To make matters worse, the vote is nearly evenly split, with only 1 vote undecided—leaving both Ethel and Lucy going all out to court that vote! A very funny scene unfolds with Ricky and Fred trying to ‘bribe’ the undecided vote’s husband, but while Ricky is trying to find the Knickerbocker’s phone number via calling information ("With a ‘K’?), Fred has beaten him to the punch.
The next scene begins at Ricky’s club, with an entertaining rendition of “Cuban Cabby,” serenading an older woman whom he believes to be Mrs. Knickerbocker. Afterwards, Fred comes by, as do Ethel and Lucy—the election is over, and since Mrs. Knickerbocker wasn’t there to cast the deciding vote, the ladies are co-presidents. But the lady that Ricky serenades is not Mrs. Knickerbocker—but her mother-in-law, who was enjoying the attention!
The Club Election is available as part of the season 2 I Love Lucy DVD collection.
