How Do You Spell Christmas? - a clown Christmas skit for 1 or more clowns, performed to the song "C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S"

(Editor's note: the idea for this Christmas skit came from a photograph in the highly-recommended book, If I Were A Clown).

As the following song is played or performed (either by clowns or a chorus), 1 or more clowns create a pile of boxes, with a letter in large print on the front of each box. Optionally, an item can be put into each box representing that letter's item (a baby doll wrapped in cloth for the "C" - Christ Child, etc.) -- the stack of boxes spells "Christmas", as you can see in the following song: (scroll down past the song -- there's more :o)

    C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S
    (Jenny Lou Carson / Eddy Arnold)

    Eddy Arnold - 1961
    Jim Reeves - 1963
    Also recorded by: Rosemary Clooney; Perry Como; Kitty
    Wells; Andy Williams; Ernest Tubb; Hank Snow.

    When I was but a youngster, Christmas meant one thing,
    That I'd be getting lots of toys that day.

    I learned a whole lot diff'rent when Mother sat me down
    And taught me to spell Christmas this way:

    "C" is for the Christ Child born upon this day;
    "H" for herald angels in the night.
    "R" means our Redeemer;
    "I" means Israel;
    "S" is for the star that shone so bright.
    "T" is for the three wise men,
    They who travelled far.
    "M" is for the manger where He lay.
    "A" is for all He stands for;
    "S" means shepherds came,
    And that's why there's a Christmas Day.

Once the stack is complete, spelling CHRISTMAS, turn the stack around -- on the back of the stack is a picture (drawn beforehand, of course) of the crucifixion -- a reminder of why the Babe in Bethlehem came down.

For anyone who is interested, a CD with Perry Como singing the song is available here from Amazon.comhome page of Amazon.com
