Well Curly was very ill at the time. He had suffered several strokes and had extreme hypertension. It was amazing he could act at all. He retired shortly after this short and died 6 years later at the age of 48.

Curly's 2nd-to-last short. You can tell his voice is affected by all the "mini-strokes" he had that year. And his reactions are slower, etc. Very sad, but he was a funny guy.
