Gadzooks!! Haha! My GI Joe Jeep (1973) had a mini cannon in a trailer that looked just like this! Must be where Hasbro got the idea. Difference was a grey plastic missle sat inside the tube and a retractable spring provided the impetus for launch, and there was no mushroom cloud or nuclear fall out to blow in Joe's face.

Interesting weapon. A very powerful non nuclear high explosive called ASTROLITE (Hydrazonium nitrate) can be detonated by two #8 Blasting Caps. This high explosive was accidentally discovered when our rockets began to explode instead of lifting off. Hydrazonium nitrate is chemically related to Ammonium nitrate. It has a good cratering effect and it could be used in mining operations instead of ammonium nitrate/fuel mixtures of today. It can be mixed with powdered Aluminum or Zirconium.
