It was their manager Bill Aucoin's idea along with their producer Neil Bogart so they could get some mainstream media exposure. This was before they made it big. They had trouble selling records in the early days mainly because a lot of radio stations deemed their music too heavy for radio. It wasn't till Alive was released that they stopped going out of their element to promote their records and ditched the ridiculous money making contests they promoted.

Amazing how KISS were able to hide their identity for many years. Today that would be impossible. And I would of never thought back in the 70's Gene would have his own reality show.
