Good questions.
You see, the Shuttle has these two white rockets on the side. They're like giant firecrackers and are responsible for lifting the tank off the side.
When they're out of fuel, they drop off the side and fall into the sea from space while the Shuttle continues into orbit.
This camera shows their fall all the way into the atlantic.
No people inside. Just giant firecrackers.
They are then picked up by a ship and brought home for recycling.

It does. The shot where the ship is pulling away from the booster jsut after sep looks unreal.
